HISTORY:
The
bed preparation began with the assistance of the Hollywood Beautification
Team. HBT used powerful machinery initially to move and prepare the soil
for planting. After the pathways and water source were installed, the
plots of land were ready for planting. Local school children prepared
all of the beds by first turning the soil and then adding nutrients,
thereby beginning their environmental training. This led to the first
planting and routine garden maintenance. The garden has brought a sense
of calm and added beauty to the neighborhood. It is enjoyed not only
by the residents but also by thousands who drive by the location daily. Rotarian
Involvement: Rotarians have been instrumental in this project.
Their financial support has been strong from the beginning. The investment
of their initial funds and their confidence in the project encouraged
others to invest in the community as well. A history of the growth
has been recorded through photos. Rotarians have volunteered both in
the garden and as docents. This project brings the appropriate recognition
to the Rotary Club though the prominent Rotarian insignia displayed
at the garden.
By
using the community garden as a springboard, we intend to implement a
long-term vision that includes education about the environment, job training,
recreation and mentoring. This organic garden is being designed as a
model program for future gardens and/or greening projects. The physical
structure of the design supports a mixture of a community garden and
environmental education for schoolchildren. This combination of programs
will encourage interaction of all area residents, young and old. Community
gardens have proved to be powerful tools for developing effective social
networks and creating a safer neighborhood.
This project has benefitted the local community of Hollywood which does
not have adequate public or green spaces to enjoy. While there are many
large development projects currently under construction in Hollywood,
the residents are largely under-served by this capital. Establishing
a community garden in Hollywood has expanded community's capacity to
expose and educate at-risk youth and their families about the job potential
of the environmental sciences and fields. It will foster public appreciation
of greening as a critical component to family needs, build grassroots
leadership and motivate community networking in an interdependent and
synergistic capacity.
A special “thank you” goes to the Hollywood
Beautification Team(HBT), The Los Angeles Conservation
Corp (LACC), The Hollywood Schoolhouse and the Central
Hollywood Neighborhood Council (CHNC) for
collaborating with us on this project.
